Tip #1: Start with the Rocks Beneath the Water
Begin by painting the rocks and underlying structure before adding water. This builds a foundation for depth, making the waterfall appear more integrated into the scene.
Tip #2: Layer the Water for a Cascading Effect
Create a natural flow by layering the water with varying opacity. Start with thin, translucent layers for distant areas, and add more opaque highlights where the water hits rocks or splashes.

Dive into this beginner-friendly tutorial that teaches essential techniques for creating dynamic waterfalls and autumn foliage. Learn how to blend cool and warm colors effectively, master the art of creating depth with atmospheric perspective, and discover tricks for painting convincing water movement. Perfect for developing your landscape painting skills while exploring expressive brushwork and color theory.
Tip #3: Use Brush Strokes to Mimic Water Movement
Use vertical, slightly curved strokes for the falling water, and horizontal strokes for the pool below. This approach gives the waterfall a dynamic, natural feel.
Tip #4: Highlight for Depth and Light
Add highlights to areas where light hits the water, particularly on the edges of cascades. This creates contrast and enhances the three-dimensional effect.
Tip #5: Incorporate Mist for Atmosphere
Blend a soft, misty effect near the base of the waterfall to show water spray and add mood. Lightly dry brushing or glazing with white or light gray can achieve this.

This one was out of my comfort zone and I am so glad I did it. I am very slow but I got this one done in a couple weeks, good for me. It was challenging in the fact that you have to just finish, stop. I will send it in tomorrow. Thank you!
